City of God

OK so I know I'm a little behind the times with movies, but people get busy! We received 6 months of netflix as a wedding gift and I am loving it!

I watched City of God this past week. It's about the ghettos (favelas) of Brazil and the drug trade that developed there and has continued to dominate the culture there. It's amazing and scary the kind of system than gets set up when the government is hands off or brutal. It's hard to blame these kids from chosing a dangerous lifestyle because then they aren't poor. But they have no fear of losing their lives or taking the lives of others. It's really crazy.

They have no opportunities, not really. They have to work so hard to get out of the ghetto if they can even imagine that as an option. Most of them probably never leave the ghetto in the first place and it seems that those that do wind up heading right back.

Just another thing to reinforce that regardless of how corrupt I think our government is and how politically complacent we are that we are still living the life compared to many of these other countries!
