Don't know what you've read, but some suggestions: I saw someone reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close on the train the other day and remembered how much I loved it; Kite Runner if you haven't already read it, is a must; Special Topics in Calamity Physics is good for something a little different, kind of a mystery. Also, I know you said fiction, but Random Family is one of my favorite books and I think you, being socially aware, would really enjoy it.
I'm reading Still life with Woodpecker right now, its pretty good, lighter fare, but entertaining. It's by Tom Robbins. Also I've really enjoyed both of Curtis Sittenfeld's books and Melissa Banks (short stories). I am just getting back into reading since finally done with my thesis and can read something other then the Journal of Public Relations Research. . . thank god.
i'm blanking out on the name, but the new book by khaled hosseini - kite runner's author. soooo depressing, but good. "the thirteenth story" was very entertaining. i would highly recommend it.
