The Dalai Lama was so interesting to hear speak. His first "lecture" was about the basis of Buddhism, but also talking about mental peace and why we struggle. He spoke about a few different religions and respects them all. He said that Buddhism isn't for everybody and maybe Christianity is better for some people. He basically just wants people to be happy.
The second talk was focused on inner peace. How does he have inner peace, how can we all have inner peace. It was so interesting. He talked about mental strength in relationship to physical strength. If we have mental strength then a big stress is easier to handle. If we have mental weakness then even small stressors are devastating. Which is similar to our physical health. He said we should all study to gain and maintain that mental strength and that even he studies at age "almost 74".
He seems to be a jolly man, finds joy in small things and tries to think about the big things (like how he's been "homeless" for 50 years, exiled from Tibet) and come to peace with them.
I don't necessarily believe in Buddhism as a religious practice. But the main principles apply to everyday life in a very logical way. I think it can be considered a very healthy and beautiful life philosophy. He's a darn cute old guy with a lot of love for the world. What a lovely way to spend a day!

Wow, that's awesome that you were able to hear him speak. I agree with you wrt Buddhism. Its basic tenets are extremely applicable to everyday life, and easy to understand. I've thought about trying meditation, but I know it wouldn't come easy to me (7:49 AM and one Diet Mountain Dew already empty!) so I keep putting it off.
