Struggle

P's cousin got in a terrible car accident last week. Unfortunately not wearing his seatbelt. Now he has spinal cord damage in his thoracic spine. T6, for those of you familiar with the diagnosis. Not sure if he is complete or incomplete yet. He's been on some heavy meds after his surgery to manage his pain. He's gotten up with PT only once--limited by naseau and pain.

I am trying not to force my knowledge (albeit limited as I don't normally work with patients with spinal cord injury) on his family. I'm trying to be a resource as needed. But it's hard not to share information. I have already a picture of this man's future in my mind. Despite the many unknowns that still exist.

I have subtly voiced my opinion about the rehabs they are choosing between. Trying not to influence but still feel urgent about which program is best in the overall scheme of things. This being complicated by his significant other being close to one rehab and his mother close to another rehab. Only he can weigh and measure all of his needs against what each program can offer him.

This is unfamiliar territory for them. This will be a struggle. But they are strong, intelligent and vibrant people who are reluctantly up for the challenge.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Thoughts are with you, P, and his cousin.
